This recipe is my Great Granny's and it's been passed down through the generations. And now I'm sharing it with you! These cookies also seem like little cakes to me. They freeze VERY well and since this recipe makes about 4 dozen, you might freeze some for another day! Here's a picture of the Granny's Orange Cookies that I made yesterday. I personally think they taste better the next day, because it allows for the frosting and cookie to "marry".
Granny’s Orange Cookies:
Cookies:
1 cup butter, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 cup milk
5 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp orange peel
1/3 cup orange juice
Frosting:
1/3 cup butter, softened
1 ½ cups powdered sugar
1 tbsp orange peel
1 egg
2 cups powdered sugar
¼ cup orange juice
For cookies: blend butter, sugar, & eggs. Add remaining ingredients. Bake at 400 for 10 minutes or less.
For frosting: mix butter, powdered sugar, orange peel, & egg until fluffy. Gradually stir in 2 cups powdered sugar and ¼ cup orange juice. Frost cooled cookies. You can freeze the cookies in an airtight container.
